Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island that has been created using the method of land reclamation. It is the smallest of the three islands called the Palm Islands which are located on the Jumeirah coast of Dubai.

The island is in the shape of a palm tree, and hence the name was given to the island. It consists of a trunk, a crown with 16 fronds, and a surrounding crescent island that stretches for 11 kilometers along the breakwater. The island which is 5 km by 5 km is connected to the mainland by a 300-metre bridge, and the crescent of the palm is connected to the top of the palm by a subsea tunnel.

The developers of the island had announced that the Palm Jumeirah will feature themed boutique hotels, three types of villas, apartment buildings, marinas, restaurants, cafes, and a host of other outlets. About 22 luxury hotels have been planned to open here, out of which a few have already been established. The QE2 luxury cruise liner will find a permanent home here. The ex-cruise ship will soon be converted into a luxury hotel and museum. Some of the famous and prominent hotels which are scheduled to open on the island are:  The Fairmont Palmhotel & Resort, Radisson SAS Hotel, Kempinski Emerald Palace, Atlantis, the Palm.

Plans are on for the installation of a monorail system between the Palm Jumeirah Island and the mainland. In fact, plans are also afoot to connect the Dubai Metro directly with Dubai Airport and other major transport hubs. The system is programmed to initially carry about 2,400 passengers an hour.

The completion of the Palm Jumeirah project would mean a dream come true for the Ruler of Dubai, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who envisaged it in the 1990s.
